I am proud to announce that I have been added to the Pro Staff of Contender Spoons! Prior to starting my 2007 charter season, owners Dave Rankin Sr. and Dave Rankin Jr. asked me if I would be willing to try out some of their new spoons. There were many days when every line was running a Contender Spoon with a variety of colorful names like 'Bubba Shrimp', 'Predator Glow', 'No Way Hozay', 'Hot Wings', 'Day Old Bread' and 'Yellow Jacket'! Many other competitors' spoons that end up in the mouth of a toothy walleye quickly lose their paint, but not the Contender. What can I say about "Grizzly Gary" Wert? Insane might be my first thought. After that, I would have to say a friend and advocate for the outdoors. Gary has been blessed (or cursed) with the gift of talk and he has used that gift unselfishly to promote the outdoor sports of fishing and hunting. In addition, Gary has been a champion for the Disabled American Veterans in our area. He has given many hours in promoting and raising funds for the DAV. There are 2 annual charity walleye tournaments held for the DAV on the Allegheny Reservoir with Gary as one of its driving forces. Gary brought national attention to this event when he interviewed and won an event to go fishing with the Outdoor Channel. Instead of going on an exotic trip of a lifetime, he brought them to this event to showcase the needs of our Veterans.
